Larry Black

It is with great sadness that I share the passing of Larry, a longtime member and former leader of the OCW Wednesday rides. Larry passed away last night at Hoag Memorial Hospital, just one month shy of his 75th birthday.

Many of you know that Larry had been battling lung cancer for several years. His health had improved enough that he was able to return to the shorter Saturday OCW rides, which was wonderful to see. Unfortunately, doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to many parts of his body. He began a new type of chemotherapy, and although Larry remained positive and hopeful, the treatment was ultimately unsuccessful.

Larry was a retired Fire Captain, and that leadership instinct was always evident on our rides. He was an excellent cyclist and an especially strong climber—he even humored me by taking part in our Peaks Challenge!

But what I will remember most about Larry was the way he looked out for everyone else. He encouraged other riders, kept an eye on those who were struggling, and made sure we regrouped so that no one was ever left behind. He was the kind of rider and friend who made the whole group better.

Larry will be deeply missed by his OCW family and by all who had the privilege of riding alongside him. Rest in peace, Larry. You will always be part of our riding family.
