Although I can't remember a time when I didn't ride a bike, it wasn't until I read John Forester's "Effective Cycling" and took the League of American Bicyclists TS101 class that the world of road cycling really opened up for me. I've found commuting by bike to be great preparation for the ultra-distance cycling events that I enjoy most. I became a League Certified Instructor so that I could share what I learned with other cyclists.
