In 2005 I found myself with extra time on my hands, and a flexible work schedule. I was determined I was going to get involved with an outdoor activity that would keep myself fit, and give me an opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. Cycling seemed like a perfect sport, and I quickly challenged myself to a 40 mile bike ride through the streets of New York along with 30,000 other cyclists. I trained for 4 weeks on a very heavy, department store, mountain bike. Prior to Ride Day, my longest single day ride was 22 miles. I finished the 40 mile ride and knew immediately that with the proper equipment, some bicycle training on how to survive on the road, that this was something that I could really embrace. After researching road bikes I purchased an entry level bike, joined OCW, and I have continued to challenge myself with more demanding rides, along with making myself as knowledgeable as I can about the rules of the road to stay safe. I have been trained by the League of American Bicyclist, in their Road 1 Program, and just recently been certified as a League Cycling Instructor. I fully endorse the philosophy that the safest way to ride on the road in most cases, is to act like all the other vehicles we share the road with.
